As a joint venture of the Kansas and Missouri Hospital Associations, APS designed its Natural Gas Program to help 49 participating hospitals control energy costs and shield operating budgets from an increasingly volatile natural gas market — without adding administrative burden to hospital finance teams.
In April 2022, APS selected WoodRiver Energy as the program's natural gas supplier. Participating hospitals locked in WoodRiver's Fixed Price with Complete Requirements structure — this unique risk management locked in the rate for 100% of natural gas usage regardless of usage history.
• More than $6.6 million saved on natural gas commodity costs since April 2022, compared to purchasing directly from the local utility.
• Zero price exposure through Winter Storms Finn (2024), Blair (2025), and Fern (January 2026).
• During Winter Storm Fern, Kansas daily spot gas prices spiked to $40/dekatherm from a typical $3–$4 — a swing member hospitals never felt.
“Our partner WoodRiver has delivered savings and safety for our members and continues to look at ways to drive savings. Together, we are better in this space of natural gas savings with our WoodRiver partner.”
