OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Four years after being selected as the natural gas supplier for the APS Natural Gas Program, WoodRiver Energy and APS are celebrating a significant milestone: participating hospitals have saved more than $6.6 million on natural gas commodity costs compared to purchasing gas directly from their local utility since the partnership began in April 2022.
APS is a joint venture of the Kansas Hospital Association and the Missouri Hospital Association. The APS Natural Gas Program was designed to help healthcare organizations reduce natural gas costs while protecting their operating budgets from the growing volatility of the natural gas market.
“APS has been providing cost solutions for natural gas for over 25 years. The collaboration of our members working with a natural gas vendor has delivered savings and protection from unexpected pricing,” said Dennis George, CEO of APS. “All of the APS members on our natural gas program were protected during URI. Now, our partner WoodRiver has delivered savings and safety for our members and continues to look at ways to drive savings. Together, we are better in this space of natural gas savings with our WoodRiver partner.”
Since 2022, participating hospitals have also been protected from three major winter weather events that caused volatility in natural gas markets— Winter Storm Finn (2024), Winter Storm Blair (2025), and Winter Storm Fern (January 2026). During Winter Storm Fern, daily natural gas prices in Kansas climbed to $40 per dekatherm from an average of $3 to $4.
